SUSE Linux 10 Unleashed

The SUSE Linux 10 Unleashed book by Michael McCallister is now available (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0672327260/002-8242058-8448039?v=glance&n=283155&n=507846&s=books&v=glance). While not the best book ever written, it does offer a fairly good overview of the operating system. The best part is the inclusion of SUSE Linux 10 (what was formerly called SuSE Linux Professional) on the DVD accompanying the book. The book lists for $49.99, but can be found online for $17 cheaper, while the cost of the OS by itself is almost $60 ($7 cheaper at http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000BD1R8U/qid=1133187459/sr=8-2/ref=pd_bbs_2/002-8242058-8448039?v=glance&s=software&n=507846).

Worthwhile Thoughts on CLP

There is a review of the CLP book on Amazon that is worth looking at. In addition to pointing out the obvious (practicum-based exam, etc.), it also has this (spelling corrected from original) to say:

Also the platform they are using for this test is in lack of other words..
plain stupid. You are working with servers through java and Macromedia Flash. The latency is at least 1-2 seconds. Imagine typing something, and everything is
lagging 1-2 seconds. You see you misspelled something, and press the arrow a few
times, just to discover that you pressed a few too many. Tab doesn't work to
"shortcut" commands and links. The resolution is 640x480, so I hope the shell is
a good friend to you! Trust me, you will get super frustrated of the poor
performance of the test system!

It may not seem like working with a simulator and enduring a one to two second delay is a big deal but it is. Particularly when that delay is on EVERYTHING you do. I realize that these exams are available at very few locations, but if you have a choice between one or more testing centers in your area, make sure you choose the one that has the fastest connection and best testing machines.

Review of the CLP exam on CertCities

A review of the CLP exam, and the practicums that it uses, was posted today at http://www.certcities.com/editorial/exams/story.asp?EditorialsID=102. The best part of this article is that it includes answers to the two sample practicums, and they are varations of practicums that appeared at end of the CLP Study Guide (without answers). Anyone reading the CLP Study Guide and seeking answers to the sample practicums can- more or less - find them within this article.

Convergence Certifications

The final article on Convergence Certifications - comparing CCNT and CTP - posted today on UnixReview and can be found at http://www.unixreview.com/documents/s=9920/ur0511b/ur0511b.html. The table was a bear to create and I intend to stay away from doing that again for a while.
